It's 2020. There's a pandemic. Everything is closed and very few road races are happening. Athletes are training hard because what else is there to do? Everyone is fit and at the top of their game, and a few people in the sport have started asking, why not give these athletes a chance to show what they can do? That is how the Up Dawg Ten Miler - Chasing 52:12, the American Record for Women was born. Keira D'Amato, who has served on the Race Committee for the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run and 5K Run-Walk for a number of years, approached Race Director Phil Stewart about making an attempt on the U.S. Women's Ten Mile Run Record of 52:12, set by Janet Bawcom at the 2014 Credit Union Cherry Blossom. Ironically, guess who was holding the tape for Janet when the record was set? Keira, pregnant with her first child (see photo at right).

The record attempt will be made on November 23 at 8 AM on a closed course in Washington, DC. The location will not be disclosed, as we are not allowed to have spectators at the event due to COVID-19 restrictions. But you can follow all the action on the live stream on the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Facebook page at

We have invited a number of other athletes to try to push Keira to the record (or who knows, maybe one of them will get the record for herself!) It is sure to be an exciting race, so make plans to watch on November 23. (Note: In order to give the athletes the best chance to break the record, if the weather doesn't look good for November 23, we do have rain dates on November 24 and November 25).

There will be a livestream of the event at 8 AM on November 23 on the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run & 5K Run-Walk Facebook page at

The course is a flat, fast 3-loop course. Only volunteers and race officials will be allowed on the course. There will be no spectators.
